We always spend some of our vacation time hiking. Although sometimes it can be frustrating when my children complain, for the most part we enjoy this activity a great deal. Hiking has a lot of math in it! People usually hike at different rates, so it is fun to figure out who will arrive first, as well as how long it will take everyone to reach the top. This is a very accessible way to address slope and the constant rate of change. Equivalent fractions can be introduced as well since two points on the line will always be equivalent fractions.
