It is likely you will need to read a map at some point during the trip. Usually maps are engaging for kids, so it is a perfect opportunity to teach some math skills. Every map has a scale, and in order to figure out the distance to a location, you have to understand and be able to use the scale effectively. Various destinations can be added together to determine total distance traveled, and the amount of time it will take to get to each location can also be determined. All destinations can be thought of as a direction on a compass which is essentially a circle. You can think about a destination as being a certain number of degrees in a specific direction.
